“I’ll do it.”

Mr. Allen met my eyes with the same level of astonishment I had for myself.

A choice. He wants me to make a choice.

“Do what, what choice are you making?” He directed his attention to me, waiting for my response. Danella was looking back at me, her eyes soft but confused.

“I’ll be with you. I’ll stay with you. Bear the child that has been taken from you, but nothing more. And nothing less.” My voice trailed off. I couldn’t hear the words coming out of my mouth.

I only have one chance to make this work.

Mr. Allen chuckled deeply to himself, relaxing his stance at the podium.

“But you must let my friend go. I will pardon all my feelings, if she walks away safe.” I was now holding Danella, clutching on her as if releasing her would seal an untimely fate. This is going to work.

Mr. Allen approached where I was standing with Danella. He took a blade out of his pocket and began to cut her feet a loose, then her hands. I stepped back toward where his spot was at the podium, the spot where he left his gun. I held my eyes on him as he carefully undid the wraps around Danella’s mouth. I held my eyes on him as I quietly lifted the gun to my hands.

As the last covering was lifted off Danella’s mouth, I raised the gun.

“Danella move.” I yelled.

She quickly ducked as I shot the bullets.

One shot. Missed.

Second shot. Grazed his shoulder.

He’s charging at me. C’mon Lila, just make one shot.

Third shot. Hits the arm, he’s still moving.

Last shot.

Mr. Allen laid motionless in front of my feet. I dropped the gun.

“Lila, lets go.” Danella was in the front of the auditorium by the exit. I ran off the stage and followed her outside. I couldn’t feel my legs, but they were running. I couldn’t hear Danella call the cops when we got in the car, but she was hysterically trying to explain everything. I couldn’t process what just happened. All I could do was drive.

Epilogue

“Noelle?”

“Yeah, Lila!”

“We are going to be best friends, forever right?”

“Yes, Lila. Lila...”

“...Lila!”

I woke up in a cold sweat to Danella. Standing at the end of the couch she looked at me with one of her concerned-mom- looks. The remote was in her hand and a glass of water was in the other.

“You had one of those dreams again, didn’t you?” I nodded my head as she turned onto the news.

“I know the past sucks, but know Lila there is nothing you could have done for Noelle. She had her own problems to work through. And her father was crazy. Killing all those girls, trying to kill us too.” She flipped through the channels until she landed on the news. She shook her glass of water and commented on the lack of ice she had in it.

“Don’t worry,” she began before heading to the kitchen. “he can’t hurt anyone anymore.”

I watched her leave the room and watched the story. He couldn’t hurt us anymore.

I listened to the news anchor covering the story. A person in the background caught my eye; he was wearing a shirt that said L.A. on it and was riding a purple bike. He rode close to the camera before making a harsh left away, not looking up at all.
